It's 1 a.m. and I'm dying of thirst,
so I grab a Coke from the kitchen,
and see on the news that Clinton
sliced his first shot off the tee,
then I find a book on the floor
and discover that Frank O'Hara,
invited to read with Robert Lowell,
was nervous crossing on the ferry
(it was a snowy night), so he wrote
"Poem" (Lana Turner has collapsed!)
inspired by that day's tabloids,
and the poem was a big hit
with everyone except Lowell,
who apologized for not drafting
a poem on the spot, implying
that for him writing poetry
was not such a casual affair.
